Energy Psychology (EP) encompasses a broad range of psychological treatments that utilize the human energy system to restore functioning using a mind-body approach. Included in this grouping are treatments such as Thought Field Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Releasing Technique, Be Set Free Fast (BSFF), Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT), among others. These therapeutic modalities act to correct a disruption in the energy system, and bring balance within a disturbed internal pattern. This relatively new and innovative approach to mental and physical health has caught the attention of more “mainstream” medical circles. Research on EP is currently being conducted by the National Institutes of Health, the Kaiser Foundation, and the Veterans Administration. This research has demonstrated positive brain activity after employing Energy Psychology techniques. The effects of EP on an individual are often times dramatic and shifts regarding feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors can be long term. Some of the concepts of EP are so simple that a child can learn to use them. Around the world EP techniques are being incorporated as crisis interventions in response to traumatic occurrences such as natural disasters, and war.

How Does EP Work?
EP uses physical interventions such as acupressure/meridians, the chakras, and other Eastern based healing in combination with modern cognitive interventions to bring the body back into a normal state of functioning. The body’s energetic system utilizes it’s powerful internal resources to normalize distorted thought processes, negative emotions, and behavioral patterns that are unhelpful to the individual. The practitioner will choose an Energy Psychology technique as a therapeutic intervention depending on the client’s needs. Some interventions utilizing EP are more effective than others depending on the particular client, and all EP techniques do not work with every client. However, clinical experience shows that most people benefit from EP. Energy Psychology is a powerful psychological technique and it may elicit profound emotional release and restructuring in an individual, so it is best employed by trained professionals.
